Snowy December

In December we started learning about Habit #2: begin with the end in mind. We are getting ready for our Christmas concert. We are singing Santa Clause Is Coming To Town and we just thought of some actions to go with the songs. They are really crazy! We are also doing a class play called Bob The Goofy Reindeer. It is about a reindeer named Bob and how he is different from others but saved Christmas one year.

In Social Studies we are doing Holidays Around the World. We have been to the Netherlands, Israel, Italy, and Mexico. We will be travelling to England next.  I learned that children in the Netherlands put their shoes out for Sinter Klaas to fill with surprises. In Israel, they celebrate Hanukkah for eight days. We learned about Le Befana visiting children in Italy. And in Mexico they have pinatas at Christmas time.

Books We are Reading

On November 28th, Team 9 finished our class book Because of Winn - Dixie. It was about a girl, named Opal, finding a dog, who she named Winn-Dixie. They made all kinds of friends and learned about how it is wrong to judge others. Opal learned to treat others with kindness and at the end of the book they had a big party. We had a party like in the book with Dump Punch, Littmus Lozenges, sandwiches, and pickles.

Now we are going to start the book Wonder and Wonder is a story about a boy and how he had to get 27 surgeries.  It is about how people in grade 5 would make fun of him cause he had surgeries. We are excited Mrs. Barkman is reading this book to us.

A Windy November

On November 22, Team 9 had their first crazy windy Barkman Sale. We get to spend money that we earn by being respectful, listening, doing our work, and being proactive. We loved it because there was air hockey, slim balls, and bean babies! Everyone at least got one thing and we have a thing called the Barkman Bank and if we earn 100 dollars we get a class party.

Sincerely, Students of Team 9

Our First Class Party

Our class earned 100 dollars in our class bank so we got to watch the movie Captain Underpants! It was so funny plus we also got snacks like brownies, oranges,  and cookies! Our school earned $1800 and sold 300 cases of chocolate almonds. That is awesome! In Social Studies we are talking about what it means to be a bully and how we can solve conflicts.

A Busy September

In September we read the book My Clothes, Your Clothes. In that book it said that the clothes we wear say something about us. For example you can tell what kind of job a person has by the clothes they wear. Mrs. Barkman started reading us the book called Because of Winn Dixie. It is about a girl named  Opal and when went into the Winn Dixie store, she found a dog. She named him Winn Dixie. It is a really good book. A few weeks ago we had our Terry Fox walk at the CUP. In class we have school money. We call them Barkman Bucks. Every school day number 2 we have reading buddies. We get to read with the kindergartens and teach them how to read. In language arts we are working on something called "The Best Part of Me" and when we're done we will put all of our pages in a book.

Welcome Back!

We have had a great first week back at school and I’ve enjoyed getting to know the students in my class. We are getting into routine and have focused on building a safe and positive classroom community and celebrating our uniqueness. We created a collaborated art piece that turned out more beautiful than I could have imagined. Each student was responsible for decorating one square in whatever way they chose. We put them together and voila … a masterpiece was created. We also did a writing piece called “All About My Selfies”.

From now on students will be writing their own posts to update you on all the learning going in the classroom … so check back soon. I have a fantastic bunch of students and am looking forward to a great school year!

Sincerely, Mrs. Barkman

Brandon Mini U

Last week we also when to Brandon for Mini U! We played archery tag. There were these foamy marshmallows on the end of the arrows so when you shot at a person on the other team, it didn't hurt. We also wore masks to protect our face. The other activities we did were science experiments, building Lego robots, and building catapults.

Swimming Field Trip

We went on a swimming field trip last week with all the grade 3/4's in our school. If we wanted to swim in the deep end, we had to do a swimming test. The swimming test was 2 laps of front crawl and 2 laps of back crawl. We got to test out the new waterside! It is amazing because there are lights inside the water slide. We like when the pool makes waves.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

We finished reading the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Our class received 19 Golden tickets from Mr. Willy Wonky. We watched the movie last week. Mrs. Barkman let us bring our favourite candy to eat while we watched the movie and she made Whipple Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight. 😊

How to Writing

Today and a few days ago we have been working on our how to writing. This is a way for us to teach our classmates and teacher how to do things. It is very fun. We have learned how to: do the laundry, do a back flip, draw, ride a dirt bike, grow a pumpkin, play Mario, jump off a ramp on a bike, make a hockey figure, make a paper torch, make milk, make an ice cream sundae, walk a dog, make a loom bracelet, and swim.

After we wrote about it, we presented it to the class. Some people are making posters, showing us stuff out side, making power points, or drawings.

Sincerely,
Students of Team 9

What a Wonderful World

We have been learning about how to take care of the Earth. We can take care of the Earth by recycling, walking or biking, and turning of the lights in our house. In art we listened to the song "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong and painted what we think makes the world wonderful.

Salt Crystals

For the salt experiment we put warm water in a jar. Then we put salt in the jar and stirred it until the salt couldn't dissolve anymore and the water became saturated. Then we tied a piece of string to a pencil and put the pencil and the string in the water. We waited for a few days and observed the salt growing bigger and forming crystals. There were crystals on the string and and on the bottom of the jar. It was so cool!

They are so beautiful! We are excited to learn more about rocks and minerals. Our class has our own rock exhibit where we can bring rocks and look at them with a magnifying glass during class.

Genius Hour

We are researching whatever we want during Genius Hour. We can use a laptop, or a iPad or a computer to research our questions we may have. Some of us want to research how to do a back flip on a trampoline, how a clock knows when to move its hour and minute hands, and how games are made!!

Ninja math is where we have to master four double sided pages of multiplication facts. If you get more then five mistakes then you have to do the whole paper over again. Everyone starts at white belt and tries to get to black belt. We practice multiplication using white boards, our multiplication belts, and playing games on Mathletics.

Our Super Fun Trip to Asessippi

On Thursday we had to wake up early in the morning for our tubing trip to Asessippi. We had to wear all of our warm clothes so we wouldn't get cold. The buses picked us up at 7:30 am. It was a long bus ride. We got to ride the magic carpet that took us up to the top of the big tubing hill. We had to wait in line for our turn to ride down the hill. It was fun to go down the hill by ourselves because the Asessippi workers would spin us really fast. We also liked to ride down the hill in groups. Some of us got so spend money and buy some treats. They make really yummy fries. It was fun to have some of our parents come with us. We saw lots of people skiing too. This was the best field trip ever!

Learning About Inuit People

We had a parent come to our class and talk about Inuit people. She taught us about how they make stuff with different materials like animal skin and fur. She wore a big jacket with a large hood that can hold a baby. She let us feel real seal skin and she passed around little boots and mittens that were soft on the inside. She taught us how to make an Inukshuk out of marshmallows and toothpicks. Inukshuks help the Inuit with directions. Inukshuks look like people. She showed us pictures of dog sleds and igloos. We learned a lot from her.

Our class had a sale to get things with our Barkman Bucks and there wear items we could buy like erasers, pencils, frisbees, boom whackers, sunglasses, and beanie babies. Each student in our class has their own wallet. We put money that we earn in our wallets. We can earn money by helping a classmate, doing extra jobs, being ready for our activities, and helping Mrs. Barkman out.  Now we have the "Barkman Bank". It is a jar that Mrs. Barkman puts money in when our class works as a
team. When we get 100 dollars we get to watch a movie in class!
