Welcome 2018

Mrs. Barkman's elves made gingerbread houses with their used milk cartons. We made them with graham crackers, licorice, ju-jubes, icing, and smarties. We got a class party with snacks like candy canes, chocolate, plus cheese strings, crackers, and our friend brought us home-made reindeer candy bars. The movie we watched was Home Alone 1. When we came back to school we played the "Find Someone" game where you have to find someone and talk about what you did on your break. Now in the new year we are making black and white art. Thinking about art reminds us that we created Elf art before the break ... back 2017.

Snowy December

In December we started learning about Habit #2: begin with the end in mind. We are getting ready for our Christmas concert. We are singing Santa Clause Is Coming To Town and we just thought of some actions to go with the songs. They are really crazy! We are also doing a class play called Bob The Goofy Reindeer. It is about a reindeer named Bob and how he is different from others but saved Christmas one year.

In Social Studies we are doing Holidays Around the World. We have been to the Netherlands, Israel, Italy, and Mexico. We will be travelling to England next.  I learned that children in the Netherlands put their shoes out for Sinter Klaas to fill with surprises. In Israel, they celebrate Hanukkah for eight days. We learned about Le Befana visiting children in Italy. And in Mexico they have pinatas at Christmas time.

Books We are Reading

On November 28th, Team 9 finished our class book Because of Winn - Dixie. It was about a girl, named Opal, finding a dog, who she named Winn-Dixie. They made all kinds of friends and learned about how it is wrong to judge others. Opal learned to treat others with kindness and at the end of the book they had a big party. We had a party like in the book with Dump Punch, Littmus Lozenges, sandwiches, and pickles.

Now we are going to start the book Wonder and Wonder is a story about a boy and how he had to get 27 surgeries.  It is about how people in grade 5 would make fun of him cause he had surgeries. We are excited Mrs. Barkman is reading this book to us.

A Windy November

On November 22, Team 9 had their first crazy windy Barkman Sale. We get to spend money that we earn by being respectful, listening, doing our work, and being proactive. We loved it because there was air hockey, slim balls, and bean babies! Everyone at least got one thing and we have a thing called the Barkman Bank and if we earn 100 dollars we get a class party.

Our First Class Party

Our class earned 100 dollars in our class bank so we got to watch the movie Captain Underpants! It was so funny plus we also got snacks like brownies, oranges,  and cookies! Our school earned $1800 and sold 300 cases of chocolate almonds. That is awesome! In Social Studies we are talking about what it means to be a bully and how we can solve conflicts.

A Busy September

In September we read the book My Clothes, Your Clothes. In that book it said that the clothes we wear say something about us. For example you can tell what kind of job a person has by the clothes they wear. Mrs. Barkman started reading us the book called Because of Winn Dixie. It is about a girl named  Opal and when went into the Winn Dixie store, she found a dog. She named him Winn Dixie. It is a really good book. A few weeks ago we had our Terry Fox walk at the CUP. In class we have school money. We call them Barkman Bucks. Every school day number 2 we have reading buddies. We get to read with the kindergartens and teach them how to read. In language arts we are working on something called "The Best Part of Me" and when we're done we will put all of our pages in a book.

Welcome Back!

We have had a great first week back at school and I’ve enjoyed getting to know the students in my class. We are getting into routine and have focused on building a safe and positive classroom community and celebrating our uniqueness. We created a collaborated art piece that turned out more beautiful than I could have imagined. Each student was responsible for decorating one square in whatever way they chose. We put them together and voila … a masterpiece was created. We also did a writing piece called “All About My Selfies”.

From now on students will be writing their own posts to update you on all the learning going in the classroom … so check back soon. I have a fantastic bunch of students and am looking forward to a great school year!

Sincerely, Mrs. Barkman
